  • About Registering For Classes

Prospective Students

You can declare your major online or plan to visit with a Human Biology advisor.

Refer to this document for a list of potential paths for Human Biology majors. Please schedule an appointment with a Human Biology advisor to find out more.

Stay updated with the Human Biology Program by joining the listserv.

Current Students

Refer to this document for a graduation checklist for Human Biology.

Advising hours and rooms are listed on our advising page.

Check the undergraduate catalog and also see the list of available classes on our Academics page which can help you choose classes for the upcoming semester.

The Allied Courses Math125 and CHEM102 are not required to graduate with a Human Biology degree.  If you have completed BIOL100 before completing the Allied Courses, you do not need to take MATH125 or CHEM102.

Learn more from Hunter College's page on DegreeWorks.

Additionally, you can choose to meet with your advisor from Advising Services or Human Bio for further assistance.

Human Biology does not have rules about this over and above the general Hunter / CUNY rules. 50% of your Human Biology Major credits must be taken at Hunter (18 credits).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many non-Hunter BIOL equivalents are less than 4.5 credits. The overall credit count for the Human Biology major must be 36 credits. Therefore, if your e-permited or transferred BIOL courses are less than 4.5 credits each, you will likely need to add credits to the major to get to 36. You can do this in different ways (e.g. taking an additional track class, taking a 4.5 credit track class, completing an internship or independent study, or taking additional semester of the alternate BIOL sequence) but you should see your Advisor for specifics of your particular case.

Saying e-permitting or doing C/NC is a "good idea" is difficult to answer definitively. Consult with a Hum Bio advisor or with your advisor in Advising Services. You may also wish to discuss this with the Pre-Health Advisor, if you are pre-health.

Human Biology majors are not permitted to opt for P/NC for their core major courses: ANTHP 105, BIOL 100 & BIOL 102/BIOL 120 & BIOL 122, and STAT 113/STAT 213. Requests for P/NC for these courses will not be approved and a letter grade will still be given for the course. Please speak with your primary Hunter advisor and your major advisor when considering opting into P/NC for a course.

Yes, you should always include your EMPLID!

Please refer to our Research and Internship page.

In order to graduate with a Human Biology major, students must earn a C- or above in all of their core major courses: ANTHP 105, BIOL 100 & BIOL 102/BIOL 120 & BIOL 122, and STAT 113/STAT 213. If a student does not earn this grade, they are required to retake the course until they earn the required C- or above. Human Biology majors must also have a 2.0 GPA in their major in order to graduate.

Human Biology majors can graduate with departmental honors in their major, which will be noted on their transcript. In order to do so, students must have ALL of the following at the time of graduation: a 3.0 overall Hunter GPA, a 3.5 Human Biology major GPA, and HMBIO 40203 or HMBIO 40303 completed with a passing grade. Please note that, for the purpose of honors eligibility, major GPA calculations include ALL attempts of a course (including retakes and Fs), as well as AP scores and transferred grades. A CR grade is calculated as a C and P grades are calculated as Ds in the major GPA calculation. Please calculate your major GPA with a Human Biology advisor to determine your honors eligibility. Together, you will use Hunter's GPA calculator linked here: https://hunter.cuny.edu/students/registration/records-and-transcripts/gpa-calculator/

If you have taken courses at a previous college and would like to transfer them to Hunter, please first reach out to the Transfer Credit Evaluation Team at trceval@hunter.cuny.edu. If you have any questions, please reach out to the department that course would be housed under at Hunter. The Human Biology Program does not equivalate courses-- any decisions made by another department on course equivalency are reinforced by our program.

Registering For Classes

Make sure that you register as soon as you possibly can, i.e. ON your registration date. You visit with an advisor BEFORE your registration date to discuss your course plan.

If a course is closed you can join the wait list (if one is offered), you can check CUNYfirst daily to see if a seat opens up, and/or you can request an overtally from the faculty teaching the course.

This is the “capstone class” for the major. It is a seminar style course that addresses some of the key contemporary topics and debates in human biology from multiple vantage points. Work includes critical discussion of media and books related to human biology. Students also will work on a capstone project. See the info on prerequisites and how to register in the FAQ above. Learn about the Senior Capstone on our Academics page.

Students can request to take the Capstone only after they have taken ANTHP105 and 21 credits towards the major, typically this will be your “senior year” (after your 90th credit). Each registration period, a message will be sent to the listserv with instructions for how to request permission.

Each registration period, a message will be sent to the listserv with instructions. Typically, some PH and NFS courses will allow declared Hum Bio students to register while others will have a wait list. Public Health courses are listed under “Public Health-PH” or “Public Healths-NFS” in the “subject” section of the “class search” menu on CUNYfirst.

capstone prereqs to include a C- or above in ANTHP 105, as well as one completed BIOL sequence course with a C- or above and one completed 300/400-lvl course
