Research in the Classroom Grant

The CUNY Office of Research is offering grants for faculty to incorporate authentic research activities into their undergraduate courses. This initiative supports experiential learning, providing students with hands-on research experience while advancing faculty research and pedagogical skills.

Eligible full-time faculty and lecturers are invited to apply for one of 16 RIC Fellowships, each worth up to $10,000. These grants can be used for course releases, summer salaries, research materials, or student travel. Awardees are expected to implement their course designs in the 2025-2026 academic year and share their curricular materials as Open Educational Resources (OER).

Program Goals:

  • Support faculty in integrating research into teaching
  • Enhance faculty development in research and pedagogy
  • Assess student outcomes such as increased self-confidence, skill acquisitions, and classroom engagement

Eligibility:

  • Open to all full-time faculty, including tenured, tenure-track, and lecturers.
  • Applicants must submit a single proposal and comply with research and IRB guidelines if necessary.

Application Proccess:

  • Submit a 3-page proposal detailing you research project, how it will be integrated into the classroom, and how student learning outcomes will be assessed. Proposals are due by January 3, 2025, with awards announced in February.

Applications due Friday, January 3rd, 2025

Program Guideline

RIC Proposal Template

  • All full-time teaching staff at CUNY are eligible to apply, including tenure-track or tenured faculty as well as lecturers.
  • A faculty member may submit only one proposal. Previous winners of the RIC grant are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to new applicants.
  • All research projects must comply with the University’s policies for responsible conduct of research (RCR). For guidance refer to the Office of Research RCR resources.
  • If conducting research with human subjects (e.g. students), appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals must be in place prior to the release of funds. For more information about the IRB and human subjects research, please refer to the Human Research Protection Program resources.
  • Awardees will be required to attend one information session regarding: (1) research compliance and human subjects research and (2) Open Educational Resources (OER).
  • The PI must submit a one-page report at the end of the funding period. Future eligibility for participation in this and other internal funding programs offered through the CUNY Office of Research is contingent on the submission of a post-award report.
  • After completing their projects, RIC fellows will submit their syllabi and course materials to CUNY Academic Works.

We anticipate making 16 awards of $10,000. These funds may be used for summer salary, course release (with institutional approval), course materials and supplies, student activities, and research assistants.

The proposal must be approved and signed on the signature page by an appropriate administrative official (e.g. department chair, research dean, or provost) at the applicant’s college and should follow the standard college proposal approval process.

The entire package (proposal summary, signature page, project narrative, citations, budget, budget justification, and 2-page CV/biosketch) must be converted into a single PDF for submission via the online system.

Please use the following naming convention: RICFellows_2025_LastNameOfPI_proposal.pdf

Each proposal will be evaluated by a committee comprised of CUNY administrators and faculty, including past winners of the RIC program. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria: creativity of the idea, feasibility of the implementation and assessment plans, and potential impact and translatability of the research.
