Meet the Team

The Hunter College Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Office is the point of contact for all researchers (faculty, staff, and students) that want to submit an IRB application.

We are available Monday to Friday from 9 am - 5 pm via email, phone, or in East Building, Room 1204.
Please contact our office before directly contacting the IRB Members.

Arita Winter joined the Hunter College HRPP office as the Director of Research Compliance in 2021. Ms. Winter received her BA with a concentration in Communication from The College of New Rochelle – School of New Resources, Bronx, NY and has a Master of Science in Business Management and Leadership from The School of Professional Studies at the City University of New York.

Ms. Winter began her career with the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (CUNY) in 1999 as an Administrative Assistant for the Technology Licensing, Management and Support Office. In October 2001, Ms. Winter moved to the Office of Academic Affairs at CUNY Central, where she provided administrative support to both the University Dean for Research and to the Executive Vice Chancellor. In 2004, Ms. Winter began to transition from an administrative support role to becoming fully involved in the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the protection of research participants. In the course of that time, as the office became Research Compliance under the Office of Research, Ms. Winter continued to acquire experience as an HRPP/IRB professional and in 2017 was promoted to Research Compliance Manager. Ms. Winter also served as the Unaffiliated IRB Member for the New York City Department of Education IRB from June 2009 – January 2012.

Travis McCarthy joined the Hunter College HRPP Office as the Research Compliance Manager in 2023. He received his BS in Chemistry with a concentration in Secondary Education from The City College of New York. Travis began his career in 2016 in IRB Administration at New York Medical College which also serves as the IRB of record for Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY and Metropolitan Hospital Center here in New York City. It was there he also earned his MPH in Health Policy & Management. He later joined CUNY in 2021 as the Senior Research Compliance Administrator for the Central Office and served as an alternate member for the CUNY UI-IRB. At CUNY Central, Travis was part of the team that brought IRBManager to CUNY. Travis serves as one of Hunter College’s HRPP Coordinators as well as the College Conflict Officer (CCO).

Grant-Rodgers Kemp joined the Hunter College HRPP Office as the Research Compliance Specialist in 2023. He received a BA in French and in German with a concentration in Linguistics from Florida State University. After an almost decade long career in coaching men’s competitive gymnastics, Grant-Rodgers’ academic career began in linguistics research, investigating how children map the forms of language to their meanings using formal, behavioral, corpus, and computational methods. He pursued these questions at Tulane University, Michigan State University, and as an independent collaborator on multiple grants from the National Science Foundation. He then made the big switch to research compliance and working with the Institutional Review Board, joining the Program for the Protection of Human Subjects at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Grant-Rodgers currently serves as one of the HRPP Coordinators at Hunter College.

Howard Lune is a Professor of Sociology. He earned his PhD in sociology at New York University in 1998. Dr. Lune also holds an MS in computer science from NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematics and an AB in engineering from Harvard University. Dr. Lune is the former Director of the Graduate Applied Social Research Program at Hunter College and former Director of the Urban Studies Program at William Paterson University. He is a member of the International Advisory Board for the American Journal of Qualitative Research and a member of the Leadership Collective for the Community and Grassroots Associations section of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action. Dr. Lune is an organizational sociologist whose research and writing concerns collective action among marginal and disenfranchised social groups.

Dr. Young is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, where he runs the Experimental Social Psychology Laboratory. He received his PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Minnesota, and conducts research on the impact of emotion on judgment and decision-making. Recent projects focus on how dating couples negotiate safer sex as a function of emotional state (including sexual arousal), and the impact of math anxiety on decisions about personal finances. His teaching interests include Social Psychology, Attitudes and Persuasion, the Psychology of Prediction, and Evolutionary Psychology.
