Major

#PublicHealth@Hunter

Applications for the BS in Public Health will open January 15th-May 15th, 2025.

The Bachelor of Science program in Public Health (PH) is a selective 42-credit major entered upon completion of 60 undergraduate credits.

Public Health students will develop skills to effectively answer a vast array of public health issues such as disease, violence, and healthcare through a social justice lens. Public health professionals work to improve the health and well-being of entire communities. While clinical health professionals might treat an elderly diabetic patient, a community health professional will work to understand and reduce a community’s elevated risk for diabetes.

Public Health students will learn to analyze how behavioral choices and social structures - including poverty, racism, and environmental exposures - shape a community’s health. Majors take courses in health disparities, epidemiology, community health assessment, grant writing and public health biology to develop their analytical, health communications and social media skills; essential tools for addressing public health problems. Public health research and Capstone courses further enhance necessary skills for professional practice and/or graduate work. In addition, the major includes fieldwork experience of their choosing which give students the opportunity to apply learned skills in a real-world setting.

The Public Health BS is designed to prepare students for work in health, community-based, and human rights organizations, family planning clinics, mental health centers, homeless shelters, research centers, and media organizations, as well as in city, state, and national health departments, or to continue to advanced study.
