Public Health (PH) Minor
Prerequisite Eligibility Criteria: The 12-credit Public Health minor is open to Hunter College students with ANY major. Applicants must meet the following requirements BEFORE submitting the minor application:
1. SOC 10100 (Intro Sociology) or equivalent with grade =>C
2. Psych 10000/Intro Psych) or Psych 15000/Devel Psych) or Anthc 10100/Intro Cult Anthro) or equivalents with grade =>C
3. An Intro statistics or higher class with grade >C
4. GPA =>2.75
Alternative psychology and sociology courses do not replace the prerequisites described above. Please apply for the minor only after prerequisites with required minimum grades appear on your transcript (courses cannot be in progress.)
Description: The Public Health minor offers a background of the history, principles, and practice of public health. You will become aware of issues facing US society in areas such as climate change and health, healthcare policy and financing, or the monitoring and prevention of disease. You will acquire introductory-level skills in health program planning, health program evaluation, environmental assessment, environmental health planning, and/or epidemiology.
Courses: Public Health (PH) minor courses are typically offered 1x per academic year as described below. Course modes can be in-class, hybrid or online. Note: Course sections described as College Now (CN) are for high school students only/not open to college level students.
Course Requirements for PH Minors who enter as of Fall 2020:
Required to take the following two (2) core courses:
PH 30100 – Intro to Community & Public Health, 3 cr
Prereqs: GPA =>2.75, SOC 10100, intro or higher statistics, Psych 10000 or Psych 15000 or Anthc 10100 or transfer course equivalents or waiver from NPH. Typically offered Fall semester only
PH 30200 – Health Program Planning & Evaluation, 3 cr
Prereqs: GPA =>2.75 & pre or coreq: PH 30100. Offered Fall semester only
AND
Choose two (2) of the following courses:
PH 32500 – Environmental Health, 3 cr
Prereqs: GPA =>2.75, SOC 10100, intro or higher statistics, Psych 10000 or Psych 15000 or Anthc 10100 or transfer course equivalents or waiver from NPH. Typically offered Fall & Spring semesters
PH 33000* – Principles of Epidemiology, 3 cr
Prereqs: GPA =>2.75, SOC 10100, intro or higher statistics, Psych 10000 or Psych 15000 or Anthc 10100 or transfer equivalents or waiver from NPH. Typically offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters, usually online and/or hybrid
PH 40500 – Health Care Systems and Health Policy, 3 cr
Prereqs: GPA=>2.75, PH 30100. Typically offered Spring semester only
** PLEASE NOTE: If you are a Human Biology major, NONE of the four (4) courses you take to complete the PH minor will satisfy the requirements for the Human Biology major; you cannot use PH minor requirements to also satisfy Human Biology requirements.
