Plan Ahead

Academic Calendar and Important Dates

Parents and guardians should become familiar with the Academic Calendar so you can help support your student for their first year of college. Review information about semester start dates, tuition due dates, course withdrawal dates, college closures, final exams, and more.

Preparation Over Summer

Summer is a great time to get yourself, your student, and your home ready for the challenges and excitement of college life. It is imperative for your student to have a study space clear of distractions. Having a dedicated study area in your home will help set your student up for success at college.

The First Weeks of College

Recognize that your entire family will go through changes in the first few weeks of your child’s college journey. The first weeks of college consist of a series of adjustments, some small and some large.

Ongoing Support

While the first few weeks of college will kick off with excitement of the adjustment period, it is important to recognize that academic work, social relationships, and just day to day responsibilities may get heavier as semester progresses. You may never understand it all, but it is helpful to support your students as they try new things, perhaps try new studying methods, and explore different components of college life.

This is a time to offer encouragement and to reinforce the student’s efforts. Parents and families can also remind their students of campus services available to help with study skills, writing assignments, subject tutoring, test preparation, and stress management. Remind them to check out the students page at hunter.cuny.edu/students.
