- Notify the Office of Public Safety 212-772-4444.
- If there is a power outage, please remain in your office or classroom and listen for announcements from the Office of Public Safety. The Hunter College public address system runs on generator power and can operate during a power outage.
- Each building at the 68th Street Campus, Brookdale Campus, Silberman School of Social Work and Campus Schools are equipped with emergency generators that will enable the building to provide power for emergency lighting and certain critical features within those buildings. In most cases, elevators will return to the lowest floors but will not operate until power is restored.
- Depending on the weather outside your building, it may be safe to evacuate the area until power is restored. The standard procedure is to evacuate each building by floor in order to avoid overcrowding in the stairwells. In the past, the college has attempted to keep the West Building Lobby open with emergency lighting and restroom facilities for members of the community who may be stranded or need to rest.
- Always listen for announcements and monitor your CUNY Alert on your cellular phone.
- When mechanical ventilation is interrupted, vapors of chemicals may reach hazardous concentration levels.
- Laboratory personnel should secure experiments or activities that may present a danger when the electrical power is off, or when it is restored unexpectedly.
- Close sashes on fume hoods and clean up or put away chemicals.
- Notify the lab supervisor immediately.
- Do not perform procedures using hazardous materials until power is restored.
