MA in Anthropology

Program Overview

The MA in Anthropology program offers courses in cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, and anthropological linguistics, in order to prepare students for careers in research, teaching and applied fields.

Master of Arts (MA) in Anthropology

30 credits

  1. Required Courses: 9 credits including:
    • ANTH 70100 - Foundations of Anthropology
    • ANTH 70400 - Field Research or ANTH 78500 - Independent Study or Research in Anthropology
    • ANTH 72200 - Research Design in Anthropology
  2. Electives: 21 credits - The program of study should be chosen to achieve a specialized knowledge in one of the four fields of the discipline: anthropological linguistics, anthropological archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology. Alternatively, students, in consultation with the graduate advisor, can create a course of study that combines courses in different fields. Students may also use courses from other departments to fulfill their program requirements with the approval of the graduate advisor.
  3. Foreign Language Requirement - A reading knowledge of at least one foreign language appropriate to the field of specialization, or a demonstrated competence in statistics is required. Consult the graduate adviser for more information.
  4. A Master’s Thesis or Comprehensive Exam

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.7
  • Completion of 9 credits of undergraduate courses in anthropology or a related field (Requirement may be waived in special cases.)
  • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words or fewer
  • Official score report of the (Graduate Record Examinations) GRE*

*The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is currently waived for both the incoming Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 class.

How to Apply

Students Educated Outside the US

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
  • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
