Summer Bridge Program

SEEK Summer Bridge
2023 SEEK Summer Bridge Program

The Summer Bridge program will run Mon-Thurs from July 6-Aug 3 and is fully in-person. SEEK admitted students will be emailed an RSVP link in May.

Overview

The SEEK Summer Bridge Program is a mandatory four-week, non-residential program for incoming freshmen SEEK at Hunter participants. During the summer prior to their first academic year at Hunter College, summer participants take non-credit-bearing introductory courses in English, Writing, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Participants attend weekly skill-building workshops, daily tutorials, cultural events (e.g. museums), team-building exercises, and engage in experiential learning. The entire summer experience is deigned to prepare incoming freshmen for the rigorous academic work required of matriculated Hunter College students

Based on individual student performance during the summer program, SEEK at Hunter staff and faculty work with participants to develop an Educational Action Plan which will map out each student's career at Hunter.

Objectives

The SEEK Summer Bridge Program objectives are:

  • to provide incoming participants with concentrated work in the areas of critical reading and analysis, formal writing, laboratory science and mathematics in order to prepare them for college-level work;
  • to enhance each participant's problem-solving, critical thinking, and study skills;
  • to familiarize and connect participants with available campus resources and support services;
  • to provide program participants with academic personal and career advisement;
  • to engage program participants in experiential learning activities.

FAQ

Here are several "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) about the Percy E. Sutton Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) Summer Bridge Program.

SEEK was established to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college due to their educational and financial circumstances. Students are admitted without regard to age, sex, sexual orientation, race, disability, or creed.

Aside from checking that you wanted to be considered for SEEK at Hunter, you were selected to participate in SEEK because you personified SEEK's mission. You demonstrated that you are capable of succeeding at Hunter and we believe that you will benefit from the individualized program services that SEEK at Hunter participants receive.

No. Math Milestones are used by Hunter College to establish a student’s past level of math achievement. Math Milestones enable students to register in mathematics and statistics coursework at Hunter College for which they show competent preparation. This Math Milestone will dictate which math course you may enroll in for the fall semester.

*First time freshmen will be assigned a Math Milestone based solely on their high school math coursework and math GPA.

If that Math Milestone does not reflect your background and history of achievements in mathematics, you can take the Hunter College Math Placement Test (MPT). The MPT is a timed, multiple choice, computer-based test. The exam does not affect acceptance to the college.

Click here to review information before deciding to take the MPT.

After you have taken the MPT, if you have reason to believe that your Math Milestone does not reflect your background and history of achievement in mathematics, you can initiate an appeal process.

SEEK Summer Bridge is a four-week program that typically runs from early July through early August.

Some of the summer courses offered include: English, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Writing.

No. SEEK Summer Bridge instructors will provide all needed course materials.

Course materials and admission for any field trips will be covered.  However, participants will be responsible for their own food and transportation costs.

Since this is an enrichment program, your grades will not be recorded on your transcript nor will you receive credit for the summer courses. We will use your academic performance during the summer to determine academic support services needed during your freshman year.
