Hunter College mourns the loss of William J. Mayer, professor of Classical and Oriental Studies, who died on Thursday, April 27, 2017. Professor Mayer came to Hunter in 1971, and in addition to playing a vital role here, was an eminent leader in his discipline. He served as president of both the Classical Association of the Empire State and the Classical Association of the Atlantic States, and chaired the State Council on Languages. For more than 30 years, his brilliant presentations and workshops assisted teachers throughout the U.S., and in 2003, he received the Meritus Award "for distinguished service to the American Classical League and to the Classics Profession.” He retired from Hunter in 2012.
