Jewish Studies Academics

Jewish Studies is an inter-departmental, multi-disciplinary program offering a 24-credit major with courses in history, Women and Gender Studies, Film and Media Studies, Music, Hebrew language and literature, English and other literatures, religion, sociology, and political science. It also offers a 12-credit minor and independent study.

Major in Jewish Studies

Several courses within this major may fulfill parts of the Hunter Core Requirement.

The 6 core credits required of all majors are:
HIST 20800 - History of the Jews
HEBR 22200 - Introduction to Jewish Texts and Writings

In addition to the core courses, students must select 18 credits in Jewish studies in conjunction with the program adviser, at least 6 of which must be at the 300-level or above. Up to 6 credits of independent study and fieldwork may also be taken with special permission from the program adviser.

Honors
Students will be eligible for honors in Jewish Studies upon completion of 24 credits in Jewish Studies with a 3.5 GPA and a 2.8 cumulative GPA at the time of graduation. See the course catalog for honors eligibility details.

JEWISH STUDIES MINOR

The minor in Jewish Studies consists of 12 credits in courses in Jewish Studies which must include HIST 20800, History of the Jews, and HEBR 22200, Introduction to Jewish Texts and Writings. At least 3 credits must be in Jewish literature, thought, religion, or one of the social sciences (sociology, anthropology, or political science).
