  • How to Apply

Requirements

Candidates for the McNulty Scholars Program will be outstanding undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:

  • Full-time student
  • Declared major in a STEM field such as physics, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, geography, earth science, mathematics and statistics, computer science or the psychology-neuroscience concentration
  • Have at least 60 credits and have junior-year academic standing at the start of the program the following fall semester

Students will be evaluated based on:

  • Demonstrated leadership in academic and/or community activities and an interest in continued leadership activities
  • Interest in participating in and pursuing research
  • Transcript and GPA

If selected, McNulty Scholars are required to:

  • Work in a research lab or conduct research with a faculty member at Hunter College or a nearby institution—such as Belfer, Rockefeller, Memorial Sloan Kettering or the American Museum of Natural History—for at least 8 to 10 hours each week. (A research lab does not need to be identified at the time applications are submitted.)
  • Attend biweekly professional development sessions
  • Present at the Hunter College Undergraduate Research Conference

How to Apply

To apply, students must complete the application, answer essay questions and submit unofficial transcripts as well as a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, instructor, administrator or active scientist in a research lab.

The recommendation letter should describe the instructor's relationship to the student and address the student's potential for future leadership in their chosen field.

Since McNulty scholars are required to complete research, either in a lab or conducting research with a faculty member, we may ask the faculty member or instructor who is recommending the student to assist in finding a lab placement.

All application materials must be uploaded in PDF format.

Application Deadline for 2025 McNulty Scholars Application: Sunday, March 9th, 11:59pm.

Please send all inquiries to mcnulty-program@hunter.cuny.edu.
