Undergraduate women majoring in STEM subjects (such as physics, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, geography, earth science, mathematics and statistics, computer science, and psychology-neuroscience) at Hunter College may apply to the prestigious John P. McNulty Scholars Program. The McNulty Scholars are supported for up to two years. Scholars currently receive a stipend of $6,000 per academic year to support their research and conference attendance. Faculty mentors also receive $500 per year.

Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year will be available at the start of the Spring 2023 semester.

Requirements

Candidates for the McNulty Scholars Program will be outstanding undergraduate women who meet the following criteria:

  • Full-time student
  • Declared major in a STEM field such as physics, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, geography, earth science, mathematics and statistics, computer science or the psychology-neuroscience concentration
  • Have at least 60 credits and have junior-year academic standing at the start of the program the following fall semester

Students will be evaluated based on:

  • Demonstrated leadership in academic and/or community activities and an interest in continued leadership activities
  • Interest in pursuing a PhD
  • Transcript and GPA

If selected, McNulty Scholars are required to:

  • Work in a research lab or conduct research with a faculty member at Hunter College or a nearby institution—such as Belfer, Rockefeller, Memorial Sloan Kettering or the American Museum of Natural History—for at least 8 to 10 hours each week. (A research lab does not need to be identified at the time applications are submitted.)
  • Attend biweekly professional development sessions
  • Present at the Hunter College Undergraduate Research Conference

How to Apply

To apply, students must complete the application, answer essay questions and submit unofficial transcripts as well as a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, instructor, administrator or active scientist in a research lab.

The recommendation letter should describe the instructor's relationship to the student and address the student's potential for future leadership in their chosen field.

Since McNulty scholars are required to complete research, either in a lab or conducting research with a faculty member, we may ask the faculty member or instructor who is recommending the student to assist in finding a lab placement.

All application materials must be submitted in PDF format.

Completed applications must be received by Sunday, March 12, 2023, at 11:59 pm. One recommendation letter should be sent to mcnulty-program@hunter.cuny.edu by the application deadline.

Finalists will be emailed regarding an interview, which will take place between March 27th and March 31st.

Please send all inquiries to mcnulty-program@hunter.cuny.edu.

Applications are now closed.
