About the First-Year Network

The First-Year Advising Network consists of valuable Advising resources including:

  • a customized online orientation
  • an opportunity to join a Learning Community (for students entering in the Fall semester only) based on academic interests and goals, a virtual advising and registration session, and
  • access throughout the year to our dedicated First-Year Advising Team. You can email us at fao@hunter.cuny.edu, visit us at our Virtual Front Desk, or check your Hunter email account for information from us.

Learning Community Overview

First-year students entering in the Fall semester have the opportunity to select a unique Learning Community based on their academic interests and goals.

Pre-Nursing, Nutrition, Human Biology, Community Health

LC 1 provides a foundation for future study in Community Health, Human Biology, Nursing, and Nutrition. It explores the dynamic relationship between health professions and society. Some of the courses students will take include: CHEM 100 Essentials of General Chemistry, CHEM 101 Inquiry into the nature of matter, PSYCH 100 Introduction to Psychology

LC 2 is intended for students whose long-term career goal is in scientific research or the medical professions. Courses in this LC include CHEM 102LC General Chemistry I, SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology and appropriate Math based on placement.

Pre-Business, Pre-Law

Students taking LC 3 will have an opportunity to discover and reflect upon the connections across the fields of politics, economics, and law. Courses include POLSC 110 American Government, ECO 100 Principles of Economics: Microeconomics or ECO 200 Principles of Micro Economics (for majors), PHILO 104 Introduction to Ethics and PHILO 106 Philosophy, Politics and Society.

Education

LC 4 is intended for students interested in teaching, and fulfills the prerequisites for students who intend to pursue programs in Hunter’s School of Education. Before learning about effective teaching strategies and innovations in curriculum and development, acquire a solid foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. Some of the courses in this LC include GEOG 101 People and Their Environment, HIST 151 US Colonial Period to the Civil War or HIST 152 US Civil War to Present, POLSC 110 American Government, ARTH 111 or MUSHL 101. Students may also opt for a Foreign Language at proficiency level.

Humanities and Arts I: Media, Language and Technology

Students in LC 5 will have an opportunity to explore particular areas in liberal arts that are language, media, and technology based. Courses in this LC include MEDIA 180 Introduction to Media Studies, CSCI 127 Introduction to Computer Science, CLA 110 Greek and Latin Roots of English, ANTHC 151 Introduction to Linguistics. Students may also opt for a Foreign Language at proficiency level.

Humanities and the Arts II: Arts, Culture, Society and the City

Students in LC 6 will have the opportunity to explore the disciplines of creative expression, including arts, film, music and theatre and their connections with culture, history, city and society. Coursework will include options for FILM 101 Introduction to Cinema, ARTH 111 introduction to the History of Art, THEA 101 Introduction to Theatre, as well as URBS 101 Urban Life, ANTHC 101 Introduction to Culture or SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology.

Social Sciences I: Psychology/BSW

Students in LC 7 will have an opportunity to explore interests in clinical and experimental psychology as well as social, welfare and health services. Courses in this LC include PSYCH 100 Introduction to Psychology, PHILO 101 Introduction to Philosophy, SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology, BIOL 150 CSI Hunter: Forensic Biology.

Social Sciences II: US History and Government

Students in the Learning Community (LC) 8 will explore the history, social and cultural characteristics and tensions between culturalism, diversity and democracy in the United States. Coursework includes ANTHC 100 Cultural Diversity in the US, HIST 151 US Colonial Period to the Civil War, HIST 152 US Civil War to Present, POLSC 110 American Government, as well as URBS 101 Urban Life, WGS 100 Women and Gender Studies, AFPRL 100 Introduction to Black Politics

LC 9 is intended for students who are yet undecided about a major but interested in exploring the introductory courses for majors in Arts and Sciences. Courses in this LC include options ANTHP 105 The Human Species, BIOL 150 CSI Hunter: Forensic Biology, GEOL 105 Introduction to Environmental Geoscience, CSCI 127 Introduction to Computer Science, as well as MEDIA 180 Introduction to Media Studies, MUSHL 101 1000 Years of Listening, CLA 110 Greek and Latin Roots of English and URBS 101 Urban Life, among others.

First-year students are advised by the First-Year Advising team of dedicated academic advisors. You can email us at fao@hunter.cuny.edu or visit the Virtual Front Desk for assistance.

  • A LC is a cluster of classes designed for First-year students to take in their first semester at Hunter.
  • There are 9 Learning Communities that consist of five introductory level courses, designed to introduce students to an area of study or majors offered at Hunter.
  • It is important that students select the LC that is closely aligned to their academic or career interests.

Students interested in Medical School should select LC 2- Science and the Medical Professions.

Students interested in applying to the Nursing program should select LC 1- Health and Community.

Undecided students should select LC 8- Exploring the Arts and Sciences.

All matriculated students must declare a major no later than the semester in which the combination of credits earned and credits in progress totals 60 credits or more.

More About Declaring a Major

We recommend that students take 15 credits a semester or complete 30 credits per academic year to graduate in four years. We also recommend students to take winter and summer courses.

In the first semester, first-year students are required to select a Learning Community based on their academic interests. Learning Communities schedules consists of 12-15 credits a semester. First-year students can create their own schedule for their second semester.

Before you register for classes, we recommend that you have your AP and College Now credits sent to Hunter College. Hunter accepts scores between 3-5.

  • We recommend that you take the Spanish Language Placement exam. You can register here: https://www.hunter.cuny.edu/romancelanguages/undergraduate/language-requirement/language-placement-test
  • If you completed four consecutive years of a language, please email us your name and EMPL ID number at fao@hunter.cuny.edu
