Procedures for Reporting Academic Integrity Violations

To initiate the procedure for addressing an allegation of academic dishonesty, faculty members must complete the online Academic Integrity Form indicating the recommended academic sanction, which involves a grade penalty (i.e., a reduced grade). Disciplinary sanctions may only be pursued by the Dean of Students if the case merits them.

Academic Sactions:

  • Reduced or "F" grade on academic exercise
  • Reduced or "F" grade in course

Procedure for Disciplinary Sanction

The Dean of Students has the right to pursue disciplinary sanctions against any student should the case deem appropriate, such as: substantial violations, prior violations, or when academic sanctions were not executed because the student withdrew from the course.

CUNY examples of Substantial Violations include but are not limited to:

  • Forging any type of document
  • Stealing an examination from Faculty or a College Office
  • Taking an examination for someone or having someone take it on your behalf
  • Writing a paper for someone or having someone write your paper
  • Purposely sabotaging another student’s work that prevent his/her completion of an assignment
  • Having a previous violation of the policy
  • Any violations made by a graduate and or professional student or a student who is pursuing professional licensure

Disciplinary Committee

Faculty-Student

The purpose of the Faculty-Student Disciplinary Committee [FSDC] is to resolve disputed allegations of academic dishonesty that are not resolved during meetings with the Academic Integrity Official or through Mediation.  The FSDC shall be comprised of five members: One Chairperson [faculty member] Two (2) faculty members, or One (1) faculty member and One (1) member of the Higher Education Officer series (HEO); and Two (2) student members.  A quorum shall consist of the Chairperson and any two members, one of whom must be a student. Hearings shall be scheduled promptly at a convenient time [including summers] and efforts shall be made to ensure full student and faculty representation. Individuals who participate in the hearings such as witnesses or presenters, individuals who participate in the appeals process, or any individual having a direct interest in the outcome of the hearing shall be disqualified from serving on the committee.

There are two stages to the FSDC hearing: the Responsibility phase and the Penalty phase. The hearing begins with the Responsibility phase where the FSDC members listen to witness testimony, ask relevant questions and review all relevant evidence presented. At the conclusion of the Responsibility phase the FSDC members will deliberate in a closed session [no other parties present] and make a determination. If the FSDC decides that the student is NOT responsible for the policy violation, the hearing ends and the charges are dismissed against the student. If the FSDC finds the student responsible for violating the policy, the hearing immediately proceeds to the second phase, regarding penalty. During the Penalty phase the Presenter will request academic and disciplinary charges and set forth their reasoning, while the student has the opportunity to ask for a reduced sanction. At the conclusion of the Penalty phase, the FSDC will again deliberate in a closed session [no other parties present] and make a determination regarding academic and disciplinary sanctions.

Please see Article XV for a more in-depth explanation of the disciplinary process.

Clarification of the Process

All questions regarding these procedures or the College's disciplinary process should be referred to the Office of Student Conduct in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students – Room 1103, East Building, phone 212-772-4534 or 212-396-6484, or email student.conduct@hunter.cuny.edu.
