Part-Time Student Completion Award

The Beatrice and Raymond Liebesman Completion Fund

Program Overview

More than 25 percent of Hunter students attend Hunter College on a part-time basis. Many part-time students share a common challenge — maintaining a successful balance between college studies, family obligations and work schedule. Most part-time Hunter students are unable to attend college full-time due to these commitments or limited financial resources. Despite these challenges, many part-time Hunter students maintain strong academic records while managing a myriad of personal responsibilities.

In order to address the needs of part-time students, and acknowledge both their accomplishments and challenges, Hunter has established the Beatrice and Raymond Liebesman Completion Fund, also known as the Part-Time Student Completion Award. The primary goal of this award is to provide financial, academic, and personal support services to part-time students who are experiencing the situation described above, who also meet the criteria below.

Eligibility

To be considered for the Part-Time Student Completion Award, you must satisfy the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a current part-time student (maximum of 11.5 credits) who has also attended on a part-time basis during the prior semester(s).*
  • Maintain a matriculated status at Hunter College, including BA/MA students.
  • Have completed at least 60 credits toward your first undergraduate degree. (Second undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees are ineligible for the award.)
  • Have a declared major.
  • Cumulative Hunter College GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Have a completed FAFSA on file for the current academic year with a demonstrated need, as defined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or documented international student.**
  • Maintain New York State residency. For students taking more than 11.5 credits per semester, the program will pay up to the New York State rate for eligible additional classes.
  • Demonstrated other signs of academic success.

Additional Program Requirements

  • Award candidates must attend a one-on-one meeting with the Program Coordinator.
  • Awardees must commit to registering for an additional class needed for degree completion if financial support is awarded.
  • Awardees are expected to write a brief thank you note to the donor at the beginning of each semester.

* For this program, part-time enrollment is defined as taking fewer than 11.5 credits.

** Undocumented students are encouraged to apply for the Dream.US National Scholarship.

Frequently Asked Questions

After eligible applicants are contacted by the Program Coordinator, the applicant must schedule a one-on-one meeting with Coordinator to answer basic questions and help ensure that applicant understands the Program structure and expectations.

An award candidate may take up to 3 additional credits beyond their current semester (or previous) level of enrollment at no additional cost of tuition.

Award recipients will continue to be responsible for the level of tuition that they paid prior to receiving the award. For example, an award recipient who took six (6) credits in Fall 2015 and plans to take nine (9) credits in Spring 2016 would be responsible for the tuition cost of six (6) credits (or two courses) and the award would cover tuition for three (3) credits (or one course).

Yes, the award will pay for a maximum of one (1) course during either the Fall or Spring semester.

As of Fall 2013, eligibility will terminate after one award semester.

Recipients who drop/withdraw from a course after the deadline for the 100% tuition refund are responsible for repaying the College all tuition charges related to the award course/credits.

An award recipient can take any required course that counts towards the completion of his/her degree. However, students can only take a maximum of four (4) CR/NC courses while receiving the award.

All awards are subject to available funding and final decisions are at the discretion of the Program Coordinator. Awards for the Summer and Winter sessions/semesters will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
