Costa Rica - Sustainable Development and Social Justice in Latin America (Spring and Fall)

Costa Rica Program

Summary

Location: San Jose, Costa Rica

Dates: Spring 2025: January 15 – April 13, 2025
Fall 2025: September 3 – November 30, 2025

Application Deadline: Spring: October 15
Fall: March 15

Program Fee:

Includes tuition for 12 credits*, homestay housing and partial board, arrival/departure assistance, on-site orientation, cultural activities, excursions, international health and travel insurance, and administrative fee. Airfare is NOT included in the program fee. All students are responsible for arriving at their study abroad location by the first day of the program.

*Students may enroll in up to 15 credits. This will increase the program cost. Please consult our office for further details.

Spring Program Payment Schedule:

  • $350 application fee and deposit is due on or before October 15.
  • $5,685 (remaining program fee balance; estimate) is due on or before December 1. Payments must be made with certified check or money order. No cash, personal checks, or credit cards. Payments should be made at the Office of Education Abroad during office hours.
  • Tuition in the amount of $3,660 (undergraduate, in-state rate for 12 credits) will be billed and collected by the Bursar's office; this amount must be paid via CUNYfirst by December 1.
  • Students are responsible for meeting the payment deadlines regardless of funding source, i.e. Macaulay Opportunities Fund, scholarships, loans, or any other type of financial aid. Late fees will be applied to all delayed payments.

Financial Aid: Please be sure to meet with the Financial Aid Office to discuss your particular financial aid package.

Scholarships: Students interested in applying for the Gilman scholarship should email Stephen Lassonde at ops@hunter.cuny.edu.

Program Description

This experiential learning focused program allows students to acquire or improve Spanish skills while learning about sustainability and social justice in a country well known in the region for its leading role in both fields. Students customize their program by choosing their own electives and the program is complemented by community work sessions, which, combined with the Community Engagement and Sustainable Human Development course, provide students with valuable insights and tools for personal and professional growth.

Required courses:

  • Community Engagement and Sustainable Human Development: A Service-learning Course
  • Spanish Language* (all levels)

*If you are a native Spanish speaker, you may be able to take an elective in place of the Spanish language course. Please contact our office if this is the case.

  • Current Environmental Issues in Latin America
  • Human Rights, Migration, and Social Inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Development in Latin America from a Gender Perspective
  • Responsible and Sustainable Tourism
  • Sustainable Development in Rural and Urban Latin America
  • Contemporary Latin America Through Film
  • Literatura Centroamericana (Taught in Spanish-Advanced Spanish level required)

Credits and Grades: Students may enroll in 12 or 15 credits. Please note that this will impact the cost of the program; see the cost details on this page for more information. Students will only receive credits if their converted grade is “C” or above. Letter grades for this program will appear on the transcript, but will not count towards the Hunter GPA. If grades convert to below C (C- to F), they will appear on the transcript as F.
