CUNY LEADS

About

CUNY LEADS (Linking Employment Academics and Disability Services), under the auspices of the Office of AccessABILITY, is a unique partnership between the City University of New York (CUNY) and Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (Access-VR). This program was created to provide students with disabilities at Hunter College with the skills to make realistic academic and career choices that will result in successful career outcomes.

In collaboration with the Office of AccessABILITY, Acces-VR helps students define a career goal and create a plan for employment.

Individuals must be determined eligible for ACCES-VR services based on a documented physical or mental health impairment that affects their ability to gain or maintain employment, with the expectation that VR services will contribute to achieving successful employment or independent living outcomes. Based on the student's financial status, funding may be provided for tuition, book vouchers, transportation assistance, job placement, and much more.

Provided Services

Services provided by CUNY LEADS include:

  • Personalized Advising: Whether you need help navigating college life or exploring academic programs, your CUNY LEADS advisor can provide individualized advice and support to help you succeed.
  • Career Counseling and Guidance: You will receive assistance in exploring career paths, developing job-search strategies, and connecting with potential employers through internships, job fairs, and other networking opportunities.
  • Referral to Outside Agencies: You will be assisted with applying for services outside of Hunter College, such as ACCES-VR and CBVH, for Social Service needs.
  • Resume and Cover Letter Assistance: Your advisor will help you craft effective resumes and cover letters tailored to your career aspirations.
  • Interview Preparation: We will conduct mock interviews and offer tips to help you feel confident and prepared for real-world job interviews.
  • Workplace and Academic Accommodation Support: If you require accommodations in the classroom, during your internship, or in the workplace, your CUNY LEADS advisor will collaborate with the appropriate departments and discuss possible workplace accommodation needs with you, using the Job Accommodations Network (JAN) website to ensure your needs are met.
  • Skill Development Workshops: Workshops will be conducted on various topics, such as time management, professional communication, disability advocacy based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and section 504 of the Disability Act of 1973 (amended 1990 & 2008), and disability disclosure considerations to help you excel both in your studies and your future career.
