Changing Your Personal Information

In order for Hunter College to maintain accurate records, and for you to receive important and timely information from us, it is imperative that your name and address are correct in our system. This page includes information to:

  • Change Your Primary (Legal) Name
  • Add/Update a Preferred Name

Change Your Primary (Legal) Name

To change the primary name that is displayed and reflected on your official academic record, you must complete and submit a Personal Data Change Request Form. Official and legal name changes require specific documentation outlined on the form.

A change to your primary name will be automatically reflected on the following items:

  • Blackboard display name and course roster
  • CUNYfirst username
  • CUNYfirst Student Center
  • CUNY Login username
  • DegreeWorks
  • EAB Navigate app
  • FACTS
  • Official university documents, including:
    • Official academic record
    • Official diploma
    • Transcript
    • Financial documents

Instructions:

To request a primary (legal) name change:

  1. Download Personal Data Change Request Form.
  2. Submit your Personal Data Change Request Form and copies of your supporting documents to the Office of the Registrar via the CUNYfirst Document Uploader.
  3. Contact the Registrar at registrar@hunter.cuny.edu to inform them of your request.

Please Note: Primary (legal) name change requests may take several weeks to complete and may impact your access to CUNYfirst and/or your ability to register for courses; therefore, it is recommended that you complete a primary name change request when access to your CUNYfirst account is less critical.

Add/Update a Preferred Name

Should you wish to be known by something other than your primary (legal) name, you may add your preferred first name and/or middle name directly through your CUNYfirst account. Adding a preferred name to your CUNYfirst account is optional. If you prefer to use your primary (legal) name in daily life, then adding a preferred name is not necessary.

Your preferred name will be automatically reflected on the following applications:

  • Blackboard display name and course roster(s)
  • CUNYfirst Student Center
  • DegreeWorks
  • EAB Navigate app
  • FACTS
  • Student Support Portal

Instructions:

  1. Log into CUNYfirstand click Student Center.
  2. Near the bottom of the page you will see a section labeled Personal Information.
  3. Click the link labeled Names.
  4. Click the button to Add a New Name (or click Edit if you already have a preferred name indicated.)
  5. Update your preferred First Name, Middle Name, Prefix and/or Suffix.
  6. Select Preferred as the Name Type, then click Save.

Additional steps are required for your preferred name to be incorporated into your Hunter College email address, NetID, OneCard, and/or Office365 display name. See below for details.

Update Your Preferred Name on Other Items

In addition to adding/updating your preferred name in CUNYfirst, most systems will update automatically. However, if you would like your Hunter College NetID to reflect your preferred name, you must complete a Supplemental Name Change Request form.

The following items will reflect your preferred name automatically once it's updated in CUNYfirst:

  • Hunter College Email Address
  • Hunter College OneCard Name
  • Microsoft Office 365 Applications Display Name

Note that we are unable to reflect your preferred name in your CUNYfirst username, CUNY Login username, or any official university documents. 

Supplemental Name Change Request

Frequently Asked Questions

    1. In Person:
      • Visit the Office of the Registrar in Room 217.
      • Complete the Preferred Name Request Form.
    2. Online via CUNYfirst:
      1. Log in to CUNYfirst.
      2. Go to Student Center.
      3. Click on Profile.
      4. Under Personal Details, locate the Names section and click the plus sign (+).
      5. Fill out the Add Name form with your preferred name.
      6. Note: Your last name cannot be changed through this process.
      7. Submit the form.

The update happens immediately after you submit the form online. 

Yes. Your login will change to the format:

PreferredName.LastNameTwoDigits@login.cuny.edu

Your password remains the same.

If you've saved your CUNYfirst login info in your browser or password manager, be sure to update your saved credentials. 

You may also need to clear your browser cache to remove stored login data. 

If you use the Digital OneCard ID, you'll need to log in again with your updated credentials. If you need assistance, please visit the ID Office in Hunter West, Room 203.

The following applications will reflect your preferred name automatically:

  • CUNYfirst Student Center
  • Brightspace
  • DegreeWorks
  • EAB Navigate App
  • Microsoft 365 applications (including Teams, OneDrive, etc.)
  • Email Address
  • Email Display Name

Change Your Permanent Address

To request a Permanent Address Change, download and submit a Personal Data Change Request Form and copies of your supporting documents to the Office of the Registrar via the CUNYfirst Document Uploader. Also, it is recommended that you file a change of address with your local U.S. Post Office. Please allow at least one month for the change to be processed.

Please Note: Changes to an address outside New York State will automatically result in a billing status change to out-of-state, while a change to an address within New York State will not automatically change the billing status to in-state (see CUNY's Residency in Brief page).

Add/Update a Mailing Address

The mailing address is used to send you official correspondence from Hunter College and the University, including your diploma. You may add/update your mailing address at anytime through your CUNYfirst Student Center.

Instructions:

  1. Log into CUNYfirst and click Student Center.
  2. Near the bottom of the page you will see a section labeled Personal Information.
  3. Click the drop and select Addresses.
  4. Click the button to Add a New Address (or click Edit if you already have a mailing address indicated.)
  5. Enter your mailing address and click Save.
  6. Select Mail for the Address Type and click Save.

Please Note: Changes to your mailing address will not change your Permanent Address or affect your residency status. To change your Permanent Address, see above.

Change Your Gender Identity

You may download and submit a Gender Change Request Form to the Office of the Registrar via the CUNYfirst Document Uploader. No additional documentation is required to change your gender in CUNYfirst.

Please Note: Changing your gender in CUNYfirst may cause a mismatch if you are a recipient of federal financial aid. You are advised to contact your college’s financial aid office to alert the office of the gender change. In addition, you are advised to contact the Social Security Administration, to prevent any problems with data mismatches between that agency’s records and the information on file with the federal Department of Education, which administers federal student aid programs.
