Congratulations on reaching this important milestone in your academic journey! If you are nearing the completion of your degree requirements at Hunter College, it’s time to apply for graduation. This step ensures that your academic records are reviewed and your degree is officially conferred. On this page, you’ll find all the information you need about the application process, deadlines, and what to expect as you prepare for graduation. What is Graduation?

Graduation from Hunter College means that you have officially completed your academic degree requirements. Your degree conferral is the official acknowledgment of your graduation and is noted on your official transcript. The diploma is the document you receive to announce that you have been awarded your degree.

When to apply to graduate

2025 Deadline: April 1, 2025

To ensure that you are invited to the Class of 2025 Commencement Ceremony your name is included in the Commencement Program, you must apply to graduate by April 1, 2025.

Degrees are conferred four (4) times per academic year. You should apply to graduate based on when you will complete your degree requirements.

Summer 2025 February 16, 2025 - April 1, 2025* September 1, 2025
Fall 2025 June 16, 2025 – October 15, 2025 January 1, 2026
Winter 2025 June 16, 2025 – October 15, 2025 February 1, 2026

*Summer Graduation Candidates must apply to graduate by the April 1st deadline to ensure they are invited to the Commencement Ceremony and their name is included in the Commencement Program. 

Candidates for Summer Graduation who submit their application after the April 1st Commencement deadline will still be eligible to graduate if they apply by June 15th. However, their names will not be included in the Commencement Program, and they will not be able to participate in the Commencement ceremony.

How to Apply to Graduate

You must apply to graduate – it does not happen automatically. To apply to graduate:

  1. Refer to the table above to determine when you should apply to graduate.
  2. Visit your CUNYfirst Student Center and select the drop down tab that reads Apply to Graduate.
  3. Select the available term.
  4. Await your degree audit results.
  5. Review your degree audit results and obtain any missing requirements prior to your anticipated degree conferral date.

Commencement Ceremony

The Commencement Ceremony, also known as Commencement, is Hunter's annual celebration to recognize our recent graduates and graduation candidates. Only students who have applied to graduate will be invited to attend Commencement. Attendance at Commencement is not an indication that you have officially completed your degree.

Prior to your degree conferral:

  • Be sure all personal information on your CUNYfirst account is correct and up-to-date, including your Primary Name, Permanent Address and Social Security Number.
  • Check that you have the appropriate major, minor and/or certificate program declared on your transcript.
  • Confirm that you have submitted the appropriate documentation for any waivers, substitutions, transfer credits or ePermits.

Upon graduation from the College, your academic record at Hunter College will be closed and cannot be changed. For more information regarding Hunter College degree requirements, rules and regulations, please refer to the College Catalog for the year you entered Hunter. For additional questions, schedule an appointment with your advisor through the Navigate for Students mobile app.
