Drop or Withdraw From a Class

Hunter has five types of grades of withdrawal: W, WA, WD, WN and WU.

There may be serious academic and financial consequences associated with course withdrawal. Please discuss your situation with an advisor prior to doing so. Use the Navigate Student mobile app to schedule an advising appointment.

Types of Course Withdrawals

W is a non-punitive grade initiated by a student when a class is dropped via CUNYfirst during the published withdrawal period. You may withdraw officially with a grade of W between the third week of classes and the last day of classes published in the academic calendar for Fall and Spring terms. The official deadline date for each semester and session is published in the academic calendar.

After the deadline, a withdrawal will be recommended only when it is clear that you have compelling reasons, (e.g., medical emergency, and adequate documentation, such as a formal letter from healthcare provider.) In such cases, you must submit formal verification of your last date of class attendance from your instructor to the Office of the Registrar.

If you have not met all of the immunization requirements a grade of WA will be applied to each course for which you are registered. Visit Immunization Records for a complete list of immunization forms or to provide documentation of previous immunizations.

WD is a non-punitive grade initiated by a student when a class is dropped via CUNYfirst after the financial aid certification date but before the published withdrawal period (usually, the second and third week of classes). The course and grade will not appear on transcripts.

If a student never attended the class, a WN will replace this grade after the instructor has submitted the attendance verification roster.

WN is a non-punitive grade assigned by the Office of the Registrar after an instructor has marked a student absent. The course and grade will not appear on transcripts.

A grade of “WU” is to be assigned to students who participated in an academically related activity at least once, completely stopped attending at any time before the culminating academic experience of the course, i.e., final exam, final paper, etc., and did not officially withdraw.

Effective Fall 2021, WU grade will not have punitive impact on student’s GPA. WU grade will continue to be used to denote Unofficial Withdrawal. Please review the CUNY Grading Glossary & Guidelines (PDF) for more information.

How to Withdraw From a Class

  1. Log into CUNYfirst
  2. Select Student Center > Schedule Builder
  3. Once the application opens, Schedule Builder’s Welcome page should
appear. Select the term for which you would like to withdraw from a class.
  4. There are two ways to initiate the withdrawal process. You can either:
    1. Uncheck the box to the left of the course you wish to withdraw.
    2. Click on the trash can icon.
    3. Then click on “Get This Schedule.”
    4. Then click on “Do Actions.”
  5. If the class was successfully withdrawn, you will see the word “Dropped or Withdrawn” in the result column next to the class. Once this action is complete, it is recommended to view your grades to ensure the course has a grade of W posted.

For more information about course withdrawal and grades of W, WA, WD, WN and WU, visit the Hunter College Catalog.
