Once an ePermit application is approved by your home college (Hunter):
- The status will show 'Approved'. Be sure to check for any comments or notes within the application.
- A corresponding PERM or CUNYBA billing/credit code will be added to your Hunter College schedule. These codes are not your approved courses, so no attendance is required at Hunter College. Therefore, students must register for the approved course at the host college.
- Multiple PERM codes indicate the total number of credits approved. For example, PERM 10001, 10002, and 10003 represent six (6) approved ePermit credits.
- ePermit approvals count toward your session or term’s credit limit.
ONLY AN EPERMIT ADMINISTRATOR CAN ADD OR REMOVE PERM/ CUNYBA CODES.
There is no immediate registration for the approved course(s)
Students must wait for the host college to approve or deny registration access. Some colleges send decision emails, which often contain important information—be sure to read them carefully. Remember to check your student email inbox, as well as your Junk and Spam folders.
Once approved, you will see the host college’s Term and Enrollment date & time in CUNYfirst. Before attempting to self-enroll in the approved course, review your assigned date and time and check for any holds on your account.
Access Your Registration Appointment at the Host Institution(s)
CUNYfirst → Student Center → Course Planning and Enrollment → Enrollment dates → select Fall 2025 (Bronx CC as the host) → Continue and the date and time should be visible. If you DO NOT see the host college listed, it means that the host school did not process your application.
Add the Host School’s Course to Your Schedule
Once the designated date and time is posted, proceed to self-enroll in the host course for the Host Session specified in your approved ePermit application. Use Schedule Builder to complete your enrollment. Guides and videos are available here.
Be sure to check the course status in your schedule. It should show either 'Enrolled' or 'Waitlisted'. If you are on a waitlist or have not completed all required steps in Schedule Builder (typically 3-4 steps), you do NOT have a confirmed seat in the course and is NOT ENROLLED.
If you encounter issues while self-enrolling, take a screenshot of the error message and contact the host college’s ePermit Unit for assistance. The host college must resolve any registration issues, such as enrollment appointments, prerequisites, credit limits, or closed courses. Hunter College does not have the access to update, override, or affect other institutions' policies or procedures.
Students cannot transfer or apply for ePermit approvals to a different course, college, host session, or term. If you no longer need an approved ePermit, cancel it. If a new course is required, submit a separate ePermit request and be mindful of application deadlines.
Hunter students should not finalize enrollment at another college until they receive final approval from Hunter College. To ensure your credits transfer back to your Hunter record, it is your responsibility to confirm that the courses you enrolled in have corresponding ePermit approvals on your account. Unauthorized courses or credits will not transfer back to your Hunter record or degree and will only remain for personal reference. Hunter College is not obligated to accept them.
Hunter-matriculated students may take courses at non-CUNY colleges to fulfill their degree requirements. If you plan to transfer these credits to your Hunter record, please carefully review and complete the Outgoing Non-CUNY Permit Application for approval.
If you wish to take non-CUNY courses for personal reasons, you should apply directly to that college as a non-degree student. In this case, you do not need to notify Hunter Registrar’s Office, but please note that these credits will not be eligible for transfer toward your Hunter degree.
Steps to Apply for a Non-CUNY Permit:
- Complete the Application:
- Fill out the required sections of the Outgoing Non-CUNY Permit Application.
- Submit the form to the appropriate Department Chairperson or an advisor for evaluation and approval of a Hunter College course equivalent.
- Be sure to include the course description and syllabus from the non-CUNY institution when contacting the Department Chairperson/advisor.
- For Graduate Students:
- Graduate students must consult with their Graduate Program Advisor to confirm if taking courses outside of CUNY is permitted.
- Non-CUNY course grades of “B” or better will be posted on your Hunter record as “CR”
- These grades will not be calculated in your Hunter GPA.
- If approved, submit your completed form to the Registrar’s Office.
- If your advisor does not approve the request, no further consideration will be given.
- For Undergraduate Students:
- Non-CUNY course grades of “C” or better will be posted on your Hunter record as “CR”
- These grades will not be calculated in your Hunter GPA.
- However, some degree requirements may have GPA thresholds that can impact your academic progress. Consider this carefully before applying.
- Submission & Processing:
- Submit the completed form to the Registrar’s Office and allow 7 business days for processing.
- You will be notified via your Hunter email regarding the decision or if additional information is needed.
- Ensure you submit your application before the deadline and prior to enrolling in courses at other institutions.
- Important Reminders:
- Do not finalize enrollment at another college until you receive final approval from the Registrar’s Office and the Department Chairperson or an advisor.
- For credits to be transferred back to your Hunter record, ensure the courses match those listed on your approved permit form.
- Any unapproved or invalid courses will be considered for personal enrichment only and will NOT count toward your Hunter degree.
- Payment & Financial Aid:
- Tuition and fees for non-CUNY permit courses must be paid directly to the host college.
- Since these costs are separate from your Hunter tuition, consult the Hunter Financial Aid Office if you have questions about coverage for these courses.
Verbal or email permissions from other offices/staff are not considered official approvals for permit credits taken at other non-CUNY institutions. If you have been recommended or advised to take courses on a permit, you must submit the appropriate application and await the final decision from the Registrar’s Office.
Note: The credit evaluation process for new transfer students is different from that of Hunter College students seeking to take courses at other institutions. Hunter students are required to follow Hunter College's policies and regulations if they intend to transfer external credits back to their Hunter record. For example, taking courses at a college you previously attended does NOT guarantee automatic approval.
If you cannot find answers to your questions on the ePermit website, feel free to email epermit@hunter.cuny.edu with any specific concerns.
Students who are eligible for financial aid must submit their FAFSA application through their home college. It is the student's responsibility to ensure compliance with all academic, course enrollment including courses taken on ePermit requirements necessary to maintain financial aid eligibility.
Grades and credits from approved ePermit courses will be officially transferred to your Hunter College academic record and calculated into your cumulative GPA at the end of the semester. Please note that courses and credits taken without prior authorization will NOT be transferred.
Host | 3.00 cr. | Home (Hunter): 3.00 credits | Transfers back as 3.00 credits |
Host | 3.00 cr. | Home (Hunter): 4.00 credits. | Transfers back as 3.00 credits |
Host | 4.00 cr. | Home (Hunter): 3.00 credits | Transfers back with 3.00 credits to the home course/equivalent and the remaining 1.00 credit will be posted as an Elective Credit. |
Students taking ePermit courses at other CUNY colleges, it is important to understand how these courses appear on your Hunter DegreeWorks.
DegreeWorks, an online advisement tool, updates periodically and only reflect information from your Hunter CUNYfirst record. Since ePermit courses are taken at other colleges, they are represented by PERM billing codes instead of the actual course. Once the host college reports your final grade (passing, failing, withdrawing, or incomplete), it will be transferred and posted to Hunter record.
Important Notes:
- Passing grades are NOT posted to PERM codes.
- Withdrawal grades are posted under PERM codes.
- In Degree Works, PERM codes listed under the ‘Insufficient Grades’ section have no impact on your GPA or academic record. These codes are kept in CUNYfirst indefinitely for record-keeping purposes, such as billing and credit tracking.
If you notice any errors in your CUNYfirst or DegreeWorks after your grades have transferred, please contact epermit@hunter.cuny.edu for assistance.
Students who transferred from a community college to a four-year (baccalaureate) institution without completing their associate degree may still be eligible to earn that degree through a process called Reverse Transfer. This allows credits earned at the four-year institution to be applied toward the associate degree requirements at the community college, effectively “transferring back” those credits to complete the credential.
Please note: Reverse Transfer does not involve using an ePermit to return to your former community college to finish your associate degree. Instead, eligible courses must be completed at your current four-year institution.
As previously mentioned on this site, credits will not be eligible to transfer back to Hunter if you enroll in courses at other colleges without prior approval from the E-Permit Unit in the Registrar’s Office. Courses taken without an approved ePermit are considered for personal enrichment only and will not be added to your Hunter record or count toward your degree requirements. Hunter College is not obligated to accept unapproved coursework.
